The News

The US Department of Defense (Pentagon) announced that it has ceased using AI tools from Anthropic, following months of declaring the company a national security risk to the supply chain. According to a Pentagon official quoted by the BBC, Anthropic's tools were used in military research, analysis, and intelligence operations against Iran until last week.

According to informed sources, Anthropic's tools, such as the Claude model, were essential in processing vast amounts of information. In February, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin stated that Anthropic was deemed a risk to the supply chain, implying that use of its tools should cease by August. However, use of Anthropic's tools continued until now.

An Anthropic spokesperson told the BBC they could not comment on the Pentagon's decision. Sources say Anthropic's tools were deeply integrated into the Maven system, a key Pentagon system for organizing intelligence information. Lauren Cohen, a senior researcher at the Center for Security and Emerging Technology at Georgetown University, noted the difficulty in removing Anthropic's tools due to their tight integration.

This decision has led to an expanded use of other AI tools like OpenAI and xAI in US military institutions. Sources indicate that OpenAI's tools have become more widespread in recent months within some defense departments. Anthropic's tools were heavily used in gathering and analyzing intelligence, including through the Palantir-managed Maven system.

In the same context, sources noted that US President Donald Trump met twice with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei at the White House last week. Amodei told reporters after one of the meetings that he remains concerned about the risks posed by the technology but believes they can be addressed through cooperation with the president.

Analysis & Context

From an analytical perspective, this decision reflects growing tensions between the US government and private companies in the AI domain. The government aims to ensure national security, while companies strive to protect their technologies from governmental interference. This issue also highlights the challenges companies face in balancing technological advancement with security concerns.

In a broader context, this decision also reflects changes in the relationship between the US government and tech companies. With increasing use of AI in military operations and intelligence, it has become necessary to delineate boundaries between civilian and military uses of these technologies. This decision signals that the US government is striving to maintain control over the use of these sensitive technologies.

It is also noteworthy that this decision comes at a time when relations between Anthropic and the White House are improving. President Donald Trump recently met with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, indicating that the company is working to adapt to the legal and political challenges it faces.
