The News

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale struck the Tibet region in China, resulting in the deaths of 16 people and over 65 injuries, according to Chinese media reports. The epicenter was located in the Baqin area of Naqu Prefecture, approximately 400 kilometers northeast of Lhasa, the capital city, reported Xinhua News Agency. Electricity was cut off in the area, over 339 homes were damaged, and more than 12,400 people were relocated to safe zones.

Authorities declared a state of emergency and dispatched rescue teams to the affected region. Premier Li Qiang called for urgent efforts to organize rescue operations, medical treatment, and the relocation of affected residents to safe areas. Over 400 aftershocks were reported by Chinese news agencies until Friday morning.

The affected area is situated at an elevation of about 4,800 meters and is prone to aftershocks. The Chinese government has allocated 50 million yuan (approximately 5.6 million British pounds) to support relief efforts in Tibet.

Survivors of the earthquake described their harrowing experiences. Yishi Kumo, a resident of the Naqu area, told the Tibet Daily that she was sleeping when her house began to shake violently. She added that she fled the house barefoot, her legs trembling uncontrollably as she descended the stairs. Another witness reported that the shaking was so intense it felt like "hundreds of cows passing by."

Rescue teams face significant challenges in reaching affected areas due to rockslides that have blocked roads. However, rescue teams in the Tibet region have extensive experience dealing with such situations and have demonstrated the ability to coordinate quickly and effectively. China's armed forces also have unmanned aerial vehicles for surveying the area and identifying damaged zones more accurately.

Analysis & Context

From an analytical perspective, the affected area in Tibet is among the most challenging for rescue operations due to its high elevation and proximity to earthquake fault lines. Despite this, Chinese specialist teams have shown great capacity for rapid mobilization and handling of disasters. Additionally, the region is highly susceptible to strong seismic activity due to its history of major earthquakes, such as the 2023 earthquake in Gansu Province, which claimed over 120 lives. In a broader context, Tibet is one of the most restricted regions in China, with strict limitations on foreign media access and information dissemination. Therefore, Chinese media outlets serve as the primary source for news and details when natural disasters occur in the area.
