The News

The Disability and Prosthetic Center of the Gaza City Municipality announced the launch of a humanitarian project in collaboration with the Turkish Red Crescent to assist injured and amputated individuals in the Gaza Strip. The project aims to help those who have lost limbs regain their mobility and carry out daily activities. According to the Anadolu Agency, 10 prosthetic limbs were prepared for the wounded during the months of August and September, and the second phase of the project will begin next month to assist another 10 cases.

In another context, Said Dabour, the director of the Turkish Red Crescent office in Gaza, explained that the project faces significant challenges due to the shortage of raw materials and essential parts required for manufacturing prosthetic limbs in the Gaza Strip. He added that these shortages pose a major obstacle for thousands of amputees who need rehabilitation services and prosthetic limbs.

On the other hand, Husni Muhanna, the public relations director at the Disability and Prosthetic Center of the Gaza City Municipality, stated that the center has continued to provide services to the wounded and amputated since the beginning of the war, despite the difficult conditions in the Gaza Strip. He added that more than 6,000 amputations have been recorded in the Palestinian Health Ministry's Sehhaty system and the International Red Cross during the war.

In another context, Ramzi Mahmoud, a 64-year-old Palestinian, told the Anadolu Agency that Israeli occupation soldiers seized his prosthetic limbs while he was returning from Egypt. Mahmoud explained that he was forced to choose between his prosthetic limb and his wheelchair, which led to his return to Gaza without his prosthetic limb. He also mentioned that another woman with him lost her prosthetic limb as well.

On the other hand, Ouda Abu Awrda, a young man in his twenties, told the Anadolu Agency that his injury of losing a leg in October 2023 due to Israeli shelling led to his confinement in his tent for a long period before he could obtain a prosthetic limb through the project. He added that the prosthetic limb "became a dividing line between two phases of my life."

This project comes in the context of the severe humanitarian crisis facing the Gaza Strip since the beginning of the Israeli war on October 8, 2023, where over 74,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 175,000 others injured, with 90% of the infrastructure in the sector destroyed.

Analysis & Context

From an analytical perspective, this event reflects the significant challenges faced by Gaza's population due to the ongoing Israeli blockade. The Turkish Red Crescent provides important humanitarian assistance in this context, but faces difficulties in providing prosthetic limbs due to shortages of raw materials and essential parts. In a broader context, this issue documents the difficult humanitarian conditions in Gaza, where more than 6,000 amputations were recorded during the Israeli war on the sector.
