The News

Syrian Post (Sourianews) announced on Thursday the resumption of international postal shipments from Syria to other countries through the Universal Postal Union (UPU) network after a long suspension. According to Syrian state news agency SANA, the company's chairman, Jamal Al-Din Hamad, stated that the service officially began operations on Thursday, thereby reconnecting Syria's postal system with the international postal network.

Hamad noted that the resumption of outbound postal shipments came after the successful completion of the first phase, which involved the resumption of inbound postal shipments from abroad to Syria. The inbound postal shipment system operates through the exchange office at Damascus International Airport, which serves as a key link between Syrian Post and external postal networks.

He added that this step ends a long period of absence in postal services between Syria and the world, and restores the company's role as an official channel for connecting citizens and economic sectors with foreign countries. Hamad also mentioned that the service will be provided according to international standards and competitive prices, allowing the exchange of postal goods through official postal channels.

Syrian Post announced in June the reactivation of inbound postal shipments from abroad starting from July through the exchange office at Damascus International Airport. With the resumption of outbound shipments on Thursday, postal goods services through the company are now available in both directions, from abroad to Syria and from Syria to international destinations.

Analysis & Context

From an analytical perspective, the resumption of international postal shipping services from Syria to other countries reflects an improvement in the country's economic and political situation. This development allows companies and consumers to exchange goods and products more effectively, which could contribute to enhancing Syria's external trade. In a broader context, this decision is part of efforts to rehabilitate infrastructure and basic services in Syria following years of conflict and war. It also helps in improving Syria's diplomatic and economic relations with other countries.
