The News

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 on the Richter scale hit Panama, causing damage to buildings and severe shaking across the country. According to data from the United States Geological Survey, the quake affected around 4.6 million people and was described as "likely to have widespread impacts." It struck around 3:00 PM Panama time (8:00 PM GMT) on Friday, with its epicenter approximately 10 kilometers from the town of Petaluzo Arriba in central Panama.

Videos circulating on the internet showed building collapses in the municipalities of Penonomé and Soná, including a scene of a man calling out for anyone trapped under the rubble of a collapsed building. No fatalities have been reported so far, but the extent of the damage remains unclear.

Ricardo Brown, a resident of Herrera Province in southern Panama, told Reuters that houses in the Las Mina neighborhood were damaged. Brown, aged 74, said, "We are scared. It's just the two of us here. The house has cracked, and we fear it may collapse on us."

President of Panama, José Raúl Mollinedo, announced that the government was fully mobilized to respond to the earthquake and stated that "what happened should not be used to instill panic or unrest." Tsunami warnings were issued for eleven neighboring countries, but the US Tsunami Warning System later confirmed there was no threat.

The Panama Canal, a crucial waterway connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, was unaffected by the earthquake, according to the authority overseeing traffic through it. This earthquake occurred just three days before the scheduled date for a national evacuation drill to prepare for a major earthquake, following a devastating earthquake earlier this year in Colombia and Venezuela.

Analysis & Context

Analytically, the Panama earthquake is a powerful natural event that reflects the effectiveness of the country's emergency preparedness and response plans. The impacts of the quake were widespread, leading to evacuations and closures in the most affected areas. In a broader context, this earthquake follows a series of powerful earthquakes in South America, highlighting the importance of readiness and training for natural disasters in the region. Additionally, the event underscores the need to strengthen earthquake-resistant infrastructure in vulnerable areas.
