The News

Qatar's Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, described Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a "war criminal" in an interview with a British journalist, reaffirming that Doha will continue its mediation efforts despite regional tensions. He stated that Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip amount to war crimes, and those behind them are war criminals. He added: "Hospitals and educational institutions were bombed. There is no justification for this behavior."

Al-Thani accused Netanyahu of politically attacking Qatar to divert attention from his own behavior and government. He mentioned that Israel launched an airstrike on Doha in September 2025, targeting Hamas officials during mediation efforts, resulting in the death of six people, including a Qatari security officer. He described this airstrike as a precedent in the history of mediation.

Despite the tensions, Al-Thani affirmed that Doha will continue to focus on diplomacy as the best way to achieve progress. He said: "We are trying to advise the US government on how to reach a solution, as well as the Iranians." He emphasized that there are three main files that need to be addressed to reduce regional tensions: the Iranian nuclear program and the restrictions imposed on it, freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, and frameworks for regional security between Iran and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries. He stressed that any regional security framework must be based on dialogue, non-interference, and non-aggression, in addition to increasing economic cooperation.

Analysis & Context

From an analytical perspective, Al-Thani's statements are part of the ongoing tension between Qatar and Israel. These statements reflect Qatar's firm stance against military attacks that target mediation efforts. Qatar, which plays a significant role in regional mediation, is striving to find peaceful solutions to conflicts in the region.

In a broader context, the region faces significant challenges related to regional security and the economy. Freedom of navigation in the Gulf of Oman, for example, is a vital issue that affects global trade and the local economy. It is essential to address these issues through open dialogue and regional cooperation.

It is also worth noting that Qatar plays a pivotal role in mediating between the United States and Iran, a crucial step towards enhancing regional stability. These efforts aim to ease tensions and make progress towards peaceful solutions to outstanding issues.
