A mass funeral was held in Gaza to honor the victims of an Israeli attack that destroyed a residential building in Gaza City in October 2023. Hundreds of people participated in the funeral, which was held at the Martyrs' Cemetery in the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood. The Palestinian News Agency Wafa reported that the funeral was for 105 Palestinians killed in an Israeli attack that included 20 bombs dropped by Israeli warplanes on the seven-story Taji 3 building.
According to Hani Mahmoud, Al Jazeera correspondent, many of the victims were displaced families who were forced to move to other family homes due to Israeli shelling. Mahmoud added that the funeral provided a "long-awaited conclusion" after three years of uncertainty. Abdul Majed, Director of Civil Defense Operations in Gaza, stated that Civil Defense teams were unable to reach the bodies immediately after the attack due to the targeting of heavy equipment used by the Civil Defense team.
Shams Sharaf, a relative of the deceased, confirmed that 16 bodies from his family were retrieved on Wednesday, including his parents and siblings. Sultan Barakat, a professor of public policy at Qatar University, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, noted that the international community has failed to hold Israel accountable to the ceasefire agreement signed in October 2023. Barakat said that Israel has not adhered to its commitments under the ceasefire agreement, leading to continued Israeli shelling in Gaza.
According to Palestinian Health Ministry figures, more than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire was signed. Mahmoud reported that there are nearly 5,000 violations of ceasefire conditions by Israeli forces. Barakat highlighted that Palestinians are extremely concerned about leaving their homes due to the ongoing Israeli shelling.
