Funeral services for Congolese politician Marie-Sélicitine Karondwa were held in the city of Butembo in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday. Karondwa, a member of the Unity for Independence and Social Development Party (UDSP), was attacked and beaten at his home in Butembo, an area affected by the Ebola virus, last Sunday. According to his granddaughter, Sagis Cavira, the attackers beat him and then set his house on fire. Karondwa died in the local hospital due to his injuries.

The party confirmed that Karondwa was an innocent victim because he had defended the party's stance on the Ebola threat to the population. The identity of the attackers and the motives behind the attack are still unclear.

This attack comes in the context of a series of attacks on health workers and others trying to combat the deadliest Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where more than 8,000 cases have been recorded, with approximately 4,000 deaths. This outbreak involves the Beni strain of the virus, which, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), has no specific vaccine or treatment.

The WHO reports that Ebola is present in several provinces in the Democratic Republic of Congo, including Beni, Butembo, Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Sud-Ubangi, and Tshuapa. Ituri province is the most affected. Efforts to combat the outbreak are being carried out through a village-based approach, but some residents refuse to cooperate, regarding Ebola as a government scam to steal money.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, says that eastern Congo faces a "catastrophic collision between disease and conflict" that hampers the response. It is difficult for rescuers to overcome this skepticism in areas controlled by rebels in eastern Congo, where decades of conflict and human rights abuses have fostered feelings of suspicion and distrust towards government authorities and outsiders.

Analysis & Context

From an analytical perspective, the killing of Karondwa reflects the challenges facing Ebola containment efforts in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In a broader context, officials are struggling to deal with local skepticism and opposition that complicates efforts to control the virus. In areas controlled by rebels, where there are long-standing conflicts and human rights abuses, it is difficult for officials to gain the trust of the population. There is also a belief among residents that Ebola is merely a government scam to steal money. This complicates the work of public health workers, especially in remote and newly affected areas that suffer from a shortage of medical supplies and health workers.
