The News

The man known as Hitler Mussolini Simeon Flores has won the position of mayor in the Peruvian town of Cueroabalca, according to opinion polls. The winner, who belongs to the moderate left-wing party Ahora Nación, received 229 votes out of approximately 700 voters, narrowly beating his right-wing opponent from Renovación Popular Perú by just 25 votes.

Despite representing fewer than a thousand residents, Flores's name, inspired by notorious fascist leaders, has attracted significant international attention. According to the Peruvian Electoral Office, Flores garnered around 34% of the votes. Born in the town of Cueroabalca in the Huancayo region, approximately 360 kilometers from the capital Lima, Flores's victory highlights the cultural tolerance and social acceptance of names that may carry negative connotations in other contexts.

Local media also pointed to another instance of similar naming in Peru, where Hitler Gisclén Albaz Sánchez won the mayoral position in the town of Yungar in 2018. Sánchez used a campaign slogan stating, "I am the good Hitler."

It is also worth noting that the Namibian politician Adolf Hitler Onuna, who won local elections in 2020, received similar international attention, indicating that this phenomenon is not unique to Peru.

Analysis & Context

Analytically, this event reflects the cultural tolerance and social acceptance in Peru towards names that may have negative connotations in other contexts. In a broader context, this victory underscores how names can draw international attention even when the candidate is relatively unknown locally. Additionally, this event recalls a similar case in Namibia, where a candidate named Adolf Hitler won local elections, highlighting that this phenomenon is not confined to Peru alone.
