The News

The withdrawal of US forces from Iraq has led to significant political and military transformations in Iraqi Kurdistan. On September 21, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) announced the unification of the Peshmerga (Kurdish fighting forces) under a single command structure, aiming to enhance political and military stability in the region. Nechirvan Barzani, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, stated at the unification ceremony: "Kurdistan needs one force, one ministry, and one leadership."

The unification of the Peshmerga aims to reduce the role of political parties in military leadership, thereby strengthening stability in Iraq and providing a stronger legal basis for the KRG with Baghdad. However, analysts warn that this move could mark the beginning of a more challenging phase that requires the Peshmerga to maintain political neutrality.

In terms of military preparedness, the spokesperson for the Peshmerga Ministry, Brigadier General Ouman Mohammed, noted that the Peshmerga "have always been on high alert" and successfully repelled attacks by the Islamic State in 2014 despite limited resources. Nevertheless, there is concern among Kurds regarding the future of US security support following the withdrawal.

With the US withdrawal, the Peshmerga have become increasingly dependent on cooperation with other Iraqi security forces. Former Minister of Peshmerga Affairs in the KRG, Jabar Yawar, said, "Political disputes could extend to military institutions if forces remain tied to political parties."

Additionally, local sources indicate that Iraqi Kurdistan faces new security challenges, including aerial and missile attacks. In this context, analysts view the US withdrawal as potentially aiding in the strengthening of the federal system in Iraq by removing the pretexts used by pro-Iranian armed groups. Nonetheless, experts emphasize the importance of dialogue and law in resolving disputes rather than resorting to force.

Analysis & Context

Analytically, Iraq faces significant challenges in light of the US withdrawal. Political analyst Ziadon Al-Kanani argues that the unification of Kurdish forces could help bolster stability in the country, but he warns that political disputes may continue to impact military institutions. In a broader context, Iraq also faces challenges in dealing with pro-Iranian armed groups, necessitating the Iraqi government to find peaceful solutions to these disputes. Meanwhile, Kurdish forces face the challenge of ensuring their security post-US withdrawal, particularly in light of aerial and missile attacks in the region.
