The News

A 15-year-old French student suffered serious injuries to his hand after a smoke bomb exploded in the northern city of Lens, raising concerns over the excessive use of force by police against students. According to unconfirmed reports, the student threw the smoke bomb, hoping to throw it back before it exploded, but it detonated in his hand instead. Police sources indicated that preliminary investigations have yet to determine whether the student threw the smoke bomb himself or if it fell on him.

Francois-Xavier Lauch, the prefect of the Pas-de-Calais region, stated that the student's life is not in danger, while Education Minister Edouard Philippe described the injury as "dramatic" but declined to comment further until the circumstances are fully determined. Philippe also noted that 190 students have been injured since the protests began.

This incident occurs amid escalating student protests against employment issues and school maintenance problems in French secondary schools. The protests, which began at the end of last month in a Paris suburb, have now spread widely across the country. According to data from the Ministry of Education, 589 schools in the country were disrupted on Monday, while 735 schools were affected on Friday.

Amnesty International France expressed concern over the excessive use of force against students, noting that many of the protesters are minors under the age of 18. The organization stated that it is demanding the authorities ensure that police methods are appropriate and in line with France's human rights commitments.

In an interview with a French television channel, government spokeswoman Sibeth Ndiaye said the priority is "restoring order." The French news agency reported that the internal police are investigating six cases of serious injuries that occurred during student protests. According to data from the Ministry of Education, 24 schools were burned or vandalized during the protests, while 78 teachers were injured.

Al Jazeera correspondent Natasha Butler reported from a secondary school in Paris that students had placed barricades in front of the school entrance using garbage bins and fences. Butler added that the students say they are protesting the lack of teachers in subjects such as math and foreign languages. She also noted that the students are demanding the right to equal education with students in the poorer areas of France.

Analysis & Context

Analytically, this incident highlights the tension and division in French society regarding education. Protests that began at a secondary school in a Paris suburb have spread across the country, leading to school closures and disruption of the educational process. According to Amnesty International, protests against the excessive use of force by police against students are raising concerns about the respect for human rights. In a broader context, France faces significant challenges in the education sector, including a shortage of teachers and poor school conditions. These protests highlight the need for fundamental reforms in the French education system to ensure quality education for all students.
