The News

Ethiopian federal forces announced their control over Mekelle, the capital of the Tigray region, following the withdrawal of Tigray Popular Liberation Front troops. According to media reports, Tigray forces pulled out of the city to avoid conflict with federal troops. Media sources also reported that federal forces entered the city center and secured control of the main airport. Humanitarian sources stated that federal forces now control most parts of the city.

Clashes erupted on September 23 when seven armed and political groups announced their alliance against the Ethiopian government led by Abiy Ahmed. These clashes led to the collapse of the peace agreement signed in 2022, which ended a destructive conflict between the federal government and Tigray forces. This escalation raises concerns about the potential for the conflict to spread to other countries in the region.

Addis Ababa accused Eritrea, Sudan, and Egypt of supporting the opposition coalition, but both Khartoum and Cairo denied these allegations. Eritrea severed diplomatic relations with Addis Ababa over these accusations. During a meeting of leaders from Eritrea, Somalia, and Sudan in Egypt, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi warned of the challenges facing African nations and called for dialogue rather than confrontation. Sisi expressed concern over foreign interventions in African countries and called for improved relations among African nations based on mutual respect and consultation.

The United States warned that increasing tensions between Addis Ababa and Eritrea could impact the entire region. This development comes in a historical context where the Tigray Popular Liberation Front began as an armed movement against Ethiopia's military government in the 1970s before becoming the dominant force in a ruling coalition for three decades until 2018. Current tensions are seen as a manifestation of political polarization and deep-seated conflicts between Tigray forces and the current Ethiopian government.

Analysis & Context

From an analytical perspective, federal forces' control of Mekelle re-establishes the power balance in the Tigray region. This move signals a decline in the power of the Tigray Popular Liberation Front after years of conflict. In a broader context, many analysts fear that this crisis could escalate into a regional war involving countries such as Eritrea, Sudan, and Egypt. The United States and the African Union are calling for a ceasefire and negotiations to prevent further deterioration of the situation. The impact of this crisis could extend beyond Ethiopia's borders and affect stability in the entire region.
