The News

A Turkish court has issued an arrest warrant for five officials responsible for refereeing in Turkey pending their trial, following an investigation into allegations of rigging the process for appointing match referees, according to Anadolu Agency. In the latest scandal to hit Turkish football, the head of Turkey’s Central Referees Committee, Ferhat Gündoğdu, and six others have been detained on charges of forgery and tampering with personal data. Justice Minister Bekir Ağırdiren indicated that prosecutors are looking into claims of interference in the process of evaluating and appointing referees and conducting tests.

Earlier in the week, security forces arrested a referee from Turkey’s top football league, Yasin Kol, and an assistant referee, according to media reports. Police also conducted a search in the video assistant referee (VAR) room at the headquarters of the Turkish Football Federation in Istanbul. Sources suggest that the current investigation may be linked to a betting scandal from the previous year, which led to the suspension of 149 referees.

Sports journalist İhsan Sıntık, who authored a book titled “The Betting Cave” in 2024, noted that this case might be a continuation of the scandal that occurred in 2025. Sıntık added that it is unlikely that the current officials in the Turkish Football Federation will be able to remain in their positions. So far, the Turkish Football Federation has not issued a direct comment on the case, as its officials were on their way back to Turkey after a friendly match between Belgium and Turkey in Liège.

Analysis & Context

Analytically, this case highlights fundamental issues in the management of football in Turkey. Corruption in refereeing can have negative effects on the credibility of the game and public trust. Furthermore, the case reveals a wide network of corruption within sports institutions, raising concerns about the extent of the phenomenon. Additionally, this case may have implications for the future of the current leadership in the Turkish Football Federation, as sports journalist İhsan Sınso suggests that they might not be able to stay in their positions.
