The News

The German Ministry of Defense announced that four Eurofighter jets from the German Air Force have arrived at the Lielvarde air base in Latvia, 60 kilometers from Riga, to bolster NATO's eastern flank air security. This move comes in response to a series of illegal air incursions in the region over the past months. According to BBC News, this step is a precaution ahead of Latvia's parliamentary elections scheduled for October 3rd.

Security has become a key issue in Latvia's current election, with most major parties expressing concern over increasing security threats. In this context, Maris Anderups, director of the Geostrategic Studies Center in Riga, notes that there are fears Russia may exploit this period to test NATO's capabilities in the Baltic region. However, the majority of Latvia's parties agree on the importance of maintaining the country's commitment to NATO, with Latvia committed to spending at least 5% of its GDP on defense.

Despite broad agreement on security policy, the repercussions of severing economic ties with Russia are stirring debate among voters. The economic closure between the two countries has led to a sharp decline in trade relations, negatively impacting local companies that relied on the Russian market before the war. However, a majority of voters in Latvia, according to polls, support reducing dependence on Russia. Political analyst Philip Reifferiski points out that the proximity to the war theater has negatively impacted the investment climate in the country.

At the same time, there are political currents in Latvia advocating for a more pragmatic approach to dealing with Russia, particularly concerning trade and the economy. For example, Julia Stefanienko, leader of the Sovereign Power/Latvian Youth alliance, stated that her party's direction is based on the country's economic interests rather than Kremlin support. However, these parties face challenges in attracting voters who feel neglected due to policies limiting the role of the Russian language in public life.

It is difficult to predict the outcome of the upcoming elections in Latvia, where many voters hide their political preferences until the day of the vote. Nevertheless, Moscow's influence on the election campaign is evident, whether through security threats that boost support for defense and integration with NATO, or through economic and cultural issues that divide voters.

Analysis & Context

Analytically, Latvia faces increasing security and economic challenges since the tensions with Russia. Security has become a primary issue in the election campaign due to drone attacks and the influx of migrants, raising concerns among voters.

In the broader context, Latvia also faces economic challenges due to the decline in trade relations with Russia. Many Latvian companies that were economically tied to Russia before the Ukraine war have been severely impacted. However, there are different approaches among political parties regarding how to deal with Russia economically, with some parties advocating for a more pragmatic approach versus others focusing on economic growth and investment.

It is worth noting that language and identity play a significant role in shaping politics in Latvia, with some Russian speakers feeling neglected by the main parties. This creates a divide among voters on how to deal with Russia, whether from a security or economic perspective.
