The News

Israel has announced the closure of occupied West Bank areas for a week, citing the Jewish holiday of Sukkot. Israeli Defense Minister, Israel Katz, acting on the army's recommendation, ordered the closure to take effect from Sunday until the following Saturday. Israel is tightening restrictions on Palestinian movement, exacerbating the challenges faced by residents who already struggle with hundreds of military checkpoints scattered throughout the region.

Katz stated that the closure aims to ensure Israel's security during religious celebrations. He also noted that new measures include restricting access to religious sites such as the Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem and the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron. According to data from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, there are over 300 Israeli checkpoints spread across the West Bank, severely limiting Palestinian movement.

Studies estimate that around 160,000 Palestinians from the West Bank were working in Israel before the Gaza war began in October 2023. With Israel restricting the entry of Palestinian workers, the number dropped to approximately 27,300 by mid-2024. This has led to an increase in unemployment rates in the West Bank from 12.9% in September 2023 to 30.7% in September 2024.

The Israeli checkpoints create significant obstacles for Palestinian movement, limiting access to religious and medical sites. They also restrict freedom of movement between Palestinian cities and villages, further exacerbating the suffering of the population. According to UN data, major checkpoints include Qalandia and Checkpoint 300 and Eyal.

Analysis & Context

From an analytical perspective, this move reflects an increase in tension between Israel and Palestinians. These restrictions are part of Israel's ongoing policies to enhance control over the West Bank, significantly limiting Palestinian movement. Such restrictions have a profound impact on the Palestinian economy, as Palestinians rely on work in Israel for their income.

In a broader context, this move also underscores the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestinians and its impact on Palestinians' daily lives. It also raises international concerns about the legal status of Israeli occupation, with the United Nations condemning Israeli occupation and calling for its cessation in accordance with international law.

It is also worth noting that these restrictions exacerbate humanitarian suffering among Palestinians, hindering their access to healthcare, work, and education.
