The News

Diplomatic relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea were severed on Thursday after Ethiopia accused Eritrea of participating in renewed fighting in the Tigray region. The Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it had closed its embassy in Eritrea "in reaction to the hostile and terrorist acts carried out by Eritrea against Ethiopia." Ten Eritrean diplomats were declared "persona non grata" and given 48 hours to leave the country. Eritrea responded immediately by announcing it would cut off all diplomatic relations with Ethiopia.

This move follows reports of an explosion at the headquarters of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces in Addis Ababa. According to Agence France-Presse, the explosion occurred between midnight and one o'clock in the morning, but no additional information was provided about the nature of the explosion, the responsible party, or any casualties.

Ethiopia accuses Eritrea of supporting a coalition that includes the Tigray People's Liberation Front, the Amhara National Movement, and the Oromo Liberation Army, collectively known as the Stay Alive Alliance, which is fighting Ethiopian government forces. This escalation has resulted in hundreds of deaths and injuries since the resumption of intense fighting in northern Ethiopia last week.

The spokesperson for the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that "Eritrea continues to support armed groups that threaten the security of Ethiopia." Eritrea, in turn, has indicated that these steps are unacceptable and will lead to a deterioration in relations between the two countries. The United Nations has called for a de-escalation of the situation and the initiation of talks between the Ethiopian government and the mentioned alliance.

Analysis & Context

Analytically, this development is extremely dangerous in the Horn of Africa, potentially leading to a significant escalation of security tensions. Relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea had improved considerably in recent years but have deteriorated sharply due to the conflict in Tigray.

In a broader context, this tension stems from the ongoing conflict in Tigray, where Ethiopian government forces are confronting a coalition of armed groups that include the Tigray People's Liberation Front, the Amhara National Movement, and the Oromo Liberation Army. This coalition threatens regional stability and increases the risk of conflict escalation.

It is also worth noting that the United Nations has called for a de-escalation of the conflict and the initiation of talks between the Ethiopian government and the mentioned alliance. Such a step may be necessary to maintain peace and stability in the region.
