Russia has announced a halt to its strikes on Ukraine's Kherson region to initiate a local ceasefire, paving the way for a humanitarian mission led by US First Lady Melania Trump. The ceasefire began at the start of Tuesday morning according to the Russian Defense Ministry, aiming to facilitate the delivery of aid to the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky.
This mission seeks to facilitate the entry of assistance and the evacuation of civilians from Oleshky, which is suffering from a severe shortage of food, medicine, and essential supplies. According to the UN, approximately 2,000 people remain trapped in Oleshky due to the presence of landmines and drones in the area.
The agreement was reached on October 23rd, with US First Lady Melania Trump and Pope Leo mediating, in an effort to boost peace talks between Russia and Ukraine after more than four and a half years of conflict. Oleshky is situated on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River and has been occupied by Russian forces since the start of the invasion in February 2022.
The town has been severely damaged by bombardment and war, and its residents have suffered from flooding following the destruction of the Kakhovka dam in 2023. The ceasefire will last until Saturday or longer, due to deep suspicions between Russia and Ukraine that have led to the failure of previous ceasefire attempts. Humanitarian negotiators involved in the operation stated that doctors, food, medicine, and water will be transported to Oleshky before evacuation routes are opened.
