The News

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi emphasized that enhancing the economy and international competitiveness will help maintain global confidence in the Japanese yen. In an interview with Nippon Television, Takaichi stated that her government will expand domestic investments to boost production capacity and economic growth. She mentioned that President Donald Trump's visit to Japan on September 22 included discussions about the weakening of the Japanese yen and its impact on US trade.

Takaichi noted that Japan and the US conducted joint intervention in the foreign exchange market on July 31 to address irregular fluctuations in exchange rates. According to Japanese Ministry of Finance data, Japan spent 15.4 trillion yen ($97.45 billion) on foreign exchange interventions between July 30 and August 26.

Takaichi also stated that Japanese Finance Minister Satoshi Katayama and US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin confirmed during a phone call on September 25 that the weakening of the Japanese yen is a mutual concern. Takaichi announced plans to regulate the issuance of government bonds and balance spending and financing to reduce the debt-to-GDP ratio.

Analysis & Context

Analytically, the initiative by the Japanese Prime Minister to strengthen the Japanese economy is a significant step to support the value of the local currency and maintain confidence in the Japanese yen. This intervention reflects growing concerns about an undervalued currency that can impact international trade and the Japanese economy as a whole.

In a broader context, Japan faces significant economic challenges that require international cooperation to address financial and trade issues. The joint intervention between Japan and the US underscores the importance of working together to support global economic stability and maintain the value of major currencies.

Additionally, the Japanese economy needs to improve its global competitiveness through investment in infrastructure and technological innovation. This helps bolster confidence in the Japanese yen and supports sustainable economic growth in the future.
