The News
Families in northeastern Nigeria continue searching for loved ones who went missing during years of violence with Boko Haram. Falymata Mohammed, sister of Kashim Mohammed, disappeared in 2011 while traveling with her mother from Maiduguri to Port Harcourt. Kashim, who heads the Association for Support of Families of the Missing and Displaced, said Falymata disappeared at the hands of unknown gunmen. He added that a man provided temporary information about Falymata's whereabouts in Benin, but left no contact details.
Kashim Mohammed stated, "Since then, no one knows anything about the man who came with the information." Kashim suffers from the loss of his sister, while Mohammed Alhaji Bashir lost his brother Bakura since 2012 or 2013. Mohammed said, "I lost my brother due to the Boko Haram crisis." Mohammed continues searching for Bakura, who sold beauty products in Maiduguri's market and studied civil engineering at the Ramat Institute. Local associations estimate around 17,000 people are missing in northern Nigeria, with approximately 10,000 missing in Borno State alone. The International Committee of the Red Cross and the Nigerian Red Cross Society support efforts to locate missing persons and reunite families. However, families remain uncertain about the fate of their missing loved ones.
