According to Sputnik, a project for a network of railways and highways stretching from Russia to the Indian Ocean coast via Afghanistan will become a mega project comparable to China’s Belt and Road Initiative, explains Andrey Grozin of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Oriental Studies.

Analysis & Context

From an analytical perspective, the proposed project aims to create an alternative transport network to the traditional routes that rely on the Strait of Hormuz, which are experiencing crises due to regional tensions. In a broader context, this project reflects Russia's efforts to enhance its influence in Central Asia and South Asia through infrastructure development. Additionally, it may contribute to strengthening economic relations among the participating countries, including Afghanistan, which could benefit from increased trade across its territory.
