The News

On Thursday, the Houthis in Yemen announced that Saudi forces conducted airstrikes on the capital Sanaa and three Yemeni provinces: Saada, Taiz, and Amran. The SABA news agency, which is supportive of the Houthis, reported that combat aircraft carried out these airstrikes on Sanaa and several sites in the three provinces without providing details about casualties or damage.

In turn, Colonel Majed Abdullah Nazili, the spokesperson for Yemeni forces, stated that 27 airstrikes targeted Houthi sites and gathering points in Taiz province, southwest of the country. Nazili explained that the airstrikes hit missile warehouses, command and control bases, weapon stores, and military vehicles belonging to the Houthis. These airstrikes resulted in the destruction of dozens of military vehicles and the death or injury of several Houthi fighters.

At the same time, Colonel Turki Al-Maliki, the spokesperson for the Saudi-led Arab coalition, confirmed that Saudi air defenses intercepted drones and ballistic missiles launched by Houthi groups targeting the cities of Khamis Mushait and Jizan in the kingdom. Al-Maliki also noted that a drone had targeted a power station in the city of Taif in the city of Medina two days prior.

This escalation comes in the context of the ongoing conflict in Yemen since the Houthis took control of Sanaa and several provinces in September 2014. The Saudi-led Arab coalition has supported the internationally recognized Yemeni government since March 2015.

Analysis & Context

From an analytical perspective, the latest attack reflects a rise in the ongoing conflict in Yemen since the Houthis took control of Sanaa and other provinces in September 2014. The Saudi-led Arab coalition has supported the internationally recognized Yemeni government since March 2015, adding to the complexity of the situation in the country.

In a broader context, continued aerial and missile attacks are increasing tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis, threatening stability throughout the region. The conflict also relies on regional and international support, with Iran backing the Houthis while other Arab states side with Saudi Arabia.

It is worth noting that the conflict in Yemen has led to a massive humanitarian crisis, with millions of people in need of urgent humanitarian aid. This ongoing conflict underscores the need for long-term political solutions to ensure peace and stability in Yemen.
