Nigerian President Bola Tinubu declared three days of national mourning following the crash of a military aircraft in southern Ondo State, which resulted in the deaths of 25 people. Transport and Aviation Minister Victor Osagie Kiyumi stated that 32 individuals were on board the aircraft, but the Nigerian Air Force later confirmed that 25 people died, including five crew members and twenty passengers. The accident occurred when the aircraft was on a routine mission from Benin City to Lagos and crashed into a swamp near a naval base in Egwahabo.
The authorities noted that the ATR-42 aircraft, which can carry between 30 and 50 passengers, was on a military mission when it crashed. Clothing and shoes were found at the crash site, and smoke was seen rising from the area. This incident is the worst to affect a Nigerian military aircraft since 1992.
President Tinubu expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and ordered a thorough investigation into the incident. In his statement, he said, "This is a painful time for our armed forces and the country as a whole." He also directed the national flag to be flown at half-mast throughout the country in honor of the deceased. The president instructed the Air Force to begin a comprehensive investigation immediately to determine the cause of the accident to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The Nigerian Air Force plays a crucial role in the country's military operations, including efforts to combat militant groups and insecurity in several parts of the country. In recent years, Nigeria has experienced two other military aircraft crashes: one in January 2022 that killed seven people, and another in May 2021 that claimed the lives of Chief of the General Staff General Ibrahim Attahiru and ten other officers.
