The News

Authorities in Indonesia have rearrested a teacher who was previously convicted of sexually assaulting a student, after a BBC investigation revealed that he had been secretly released early from prison. Mukhamad Sabsi Azl Tusanai, known as Bechi, was sentenced to seven years in prison in 2022 after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a student at a prominent Islamic religious school in East Java. The investigation uncovered that Bechi was released in August 2025, after serving less than half of his sentence, without informing the victim who had the legal right to know about it.

When the victim learned that Bechi had returned to prison, she was overjoyed. The victim, who requested anonymity, expressed hope that no one else would go through such an experience and that justice would be served fairly in Indonesia. Public reaction to this news led to calls from parliament members for an investigation, resulting in the government announcing a comprehensive review. This review found "errors" that led to the revocation of Bechi's release, and he was rearrested.

The Minister of Immigration and Reform, August Andriantow, told the BBC that those who agreed to Bechi's release "will certainly face sanctions." He added that the government wants to ensure that such mistakes do not happen again. Ira Puspitasari, who reported sexual assault by Bechi, felt satisfied with the decision to rearrest him. Ira said she was raped and sexually assaulted by Bechi for more than four years, since she was fifteen. She pointed out that she had tried to escape but was brought back to a desolate place by Bechi's private guards where she was tortured and raped. After reporting to the police, she was intimidated into withdrawing her complaint.

During a recent parliamentary session to investigate the handling of sexual assault cases in religious and educational institutions, attorney Yoko Gumadji noted that authorities often are reluctant to investigate sexual assault cases because they involve "influential religious figures with many followers." Gumadji also pointed out that he frequently faces threats and intimidation when defending such cases.

Analysis & Context

From an analytical perspective, this event reflects the need to improve the criminal justice system in Indonesia. The system's failure to apply justice correctly led to Bechi's release before the completion of his sentence, which resulted in a strong public reaction. In a broader context, the event highlights the challenges faced by victims when filing complaints against influential figures in religious society. Victim Ira Puspitasari faced threats and intimidation when attempting to file a complaint against Bechi. This underscores the need to protect victims and ensure that criminal cases are treated with seriousness.
