Tech billionaire Elon Musk announced that his company SpaceX has restricted Starlink internet services in Ukraine after communications issues facing the country improved. Musk accused Ukraine of violating Starlink's terms of service through its military operations, but denied responsibility for a concurrent issue related to the military system Starshield. In response, Ukrainian presidential advisor Serhiy Prytula stated that Musk's post was "very strange."
Earlier, Musk denied intentionally restricting Starlink communications, affirming that the system's civilian use for military operations is not permitted. Musk wrote on X: "Using Starlink for attack drones to kill people was not allowed, and should not be." In turn, Prytula mentioned that attack drones in Ukraine operate at speeds between 70 and 90 km/h and do not operate on Russian soil, making long-range strikes impossible.
Ukraine has used the civilian Starlink system and the military Starshield system as needed, with the former providing military cooperation in remote areas, and the latter offering real-time site visibility and drone operation. However, SpaceX has recently restricted Starlink services, impacting Ukraine's defensive operations. In response, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov clarified that communications have stabilized now, and drones can reach speeds surpassing 400 km/h.
Meanwhile, relations between the U.S. and Ukraine have been strained due to Ukraine's strikes on Russian oil infrastructure. Former U.S. President Donald Trump said he asked Musk to reactivate Starlink services, but denied being behind the communications restrictions. In turn, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused the U.S. of threatening to withhold intelligence sharing if Ukraine does not cease striking Russian oil infrastructure.
