The News

Prime Minister of Hungary, Peter Márton, announced the first major step in fulfilling his promise to combat corruption that spread during Viktor Orbán's rule. At the beginning of the week, parliamentary immunity was lifted from two prominent opposition party members, Balázs Hánky and Miklós Szászák, on charges of corruption.

Hánky, who served as Minister of Culture and Innovation, is suspected of using public funds amounting to approximately 50 million euros to finance Orbán's party. Szászák, one of the wealthiest members of parliament in Hungary, is suspected of receiving bribes worth around 30 million euros during his tenure as Minister for Development.

On the same day, Prime Minister Márton’s immunity was also lifted in a case involving the theft of a phone from a person who was filming him at a nightclub. Márton addressed the parliament stating that this step aims to apply the same standards to everyone, saying, "How many phones will you throw into the Danube until you come close to the billions stolen by Orbán's gang?"

Hánky faced resistance as he left the parliament, barricading himself inside the building with his family until the Speaker of Parliament, Orsolya Alföldi, officially ordered him to leave. Both Hánky and Szászák were placed under house arrest.

Prime Minister Márton faces significant challenges in meeting the public's high expectations for fighting corruption while maintaining judicial independence. He also faces a conflict with the public prosecutor over the appointment of a new person for this position. A prominent lawyer, György Márton, stated in an interview with the news site Hírkapcsolat: "There should be wisdom, patience, and professionalism in dealing with these issues."

Analysis & Context

Analytically, Prime Minister Peter Márton faces significant challenges in fulfilling his promises to combat corruption and dismantle Orbán's system. In a broader context, these arrests signal the beginning of a new phase in Hungarian politics, where the new regime aims to demonstrate judicial independence and the enforcement of the law. However, the question remains whether these steps will be mere theater or will lead to the actual resolution of corruption cases. Simultaneously, many Hungarians demand the strict and professional enforcement of the law while maintaining judicial independence.
