Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide described the murder committed by an American soldier in Okinawa Prefecture as a "brutal crime" and called on the United States to enforce disciplinary measures strictly. Suga stated in her parliamentary address that she requested the US to provide "full cooperation with the investigation" into the incident. She expressed deep regret for the occurrence of such a crime, indicating that the Japanese government is demanding stricter disciplinary measures among US forces stationed in Japan.

According to Kyodo News Agency, a 20-year-old US Navy soldier was arrested in Naha City, Okinawa, in connection with the killing of a 39-year-old Japanese woman and the seizure of her jeep. The Japanese police denied that the victim was killed in a robbery, but confirmed that her body was found in a hotel room and she might have died from asphyxiation. The police stated that the suspect was handed over to Japanese prosecutors after his arrest.

This incident has sparked widespread anger in Japan, with the Japanese Foreign Ministry and the US Department of Defense summoning the US Ambassador to Japan and the Commander of US Forces in Japan to express deep concern. Protests were organized in Okinawa and Tokyo against the incident. According to AFP, Sorani Sakihama, a Japanese student from Okinawa, said she cried upon hearing about the victim's death, indicating that this incident made her very angry and sad.

Since Okinawa's return to Japan in 1972, approximately 6,000 US military personnel have been arrested in Japan, according to the Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun. This latest incident is part of a long series of crimes committed by US forces in Okinawa, including sexual assaults, traffic accidents, and other incidents that have led to widespread public protests on the island.
