The News

Two civilian ships were attacked in the Black Sea, resulting in the sinking of one and the loss of its crew, while the crew of the other ship, which was carrying wheat, was saved. Bulgarian authorities reported that the attacks took place in Bulgaria's economic zone and involved drones and missiles. Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev did not specify the responsible party but highlighted the escalation of Russian attacks in the Black Sea as part of the Russian war against Ukraine.

Radev stated that the sunken ship, flying the flag of Togo and owned by a Turkish company, was en route to Sulina in Romania. The cargo and number of people on board the ship were not specified. In contrast, the crew of the second ship, flying the flag of Palau and named "Abil," was saved after being injured in a fire on board. The crew consisted of 11 Turkish and seven Indian nationals and was rescued by Bulgarian ships.

The Bulgarian Prime Minister affirmed that the attacks constitute a "flagrant violation of maritime law." European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also expressed concern over the situation in the Black Sea, noting that commercial ships and civilian crews have become targets of attacks. Von der Leyen stated, "Attacks on civilian ships are unacceptable."

This attack comes amid an escalation of Russian attacks in the Black Sea, following statements by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about increased strikes on Russian oil refineries. Russia initiated its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, leading to increased hostilities in the region.

Analysis & Context

Analytically, the Black Sea is a strategically important area for maritime trade and transport, making it a hot spot in the Ukrainian conflict. Attacks on commercial vessels in this area increase tensions and threaten freedom of maritime navigation.

In a broader context, Russia continues to escalate its attacks in the Black Sea as part of its military strategy in Ukraine. This escalation raises concerns among neighboring countries and the European Union about its impact on global trade and maritime security.

It is worth noting that attacks on commercial ships in the Black Sea could lead to increased tensions between Russia and neighboring countries, increasing the likelihood of conflict escalation.
