The News

Sports footwear company Brooks has pulled its sponsorship deal with a well-known Chinese social media sports activist after she admitted to violating race rules at the Berlin Marathon. Sun Yuan Yuan, known as Abeeeer on Chinese social platforms, admitted to using a bicycle between kilometers 35 and 40 during the September race. Brooks stated in a statement that "running must be based on honesty, fairness, and respect for competition," and that they ended their relationship with Sun after verifying the facts.

The Instagram account called Official Marathon Time Integrity Unit (OMTIU) posted a picture showing Sun on a bicycle while someone else was driving it. The account also pointed out the sudden acceleration of Sun's time between kilometers 35 and 40, the distance where Sun admitted she was riding the bicycle. Sun wrote in her apology on the Chinese platform Rednote: "I will not find any excuse for this behavior. This is not an excuse for breaking the rules."

OMTIU explained that its mission is to protect the integrity of sports by ensuring that the times athletes share reflect the actual times they ran in the race. The Berlin Marathon administration stated they have no comment on individual cases but take appropriate measures in cases of proven fraud.

This case sparked wide debate around integrity in digital sports, where the competition among famous athletes on social media is becoming more intense. This case exemplifies the challenges faced by sports organizations in maintaining the integrity of races in the digital age.

Analysis & Context

From an analytical perspective, this incident reflects the increasing challenges that major sporting events face in maintaining the credibility of recorded times. Some athletes use fitness tracking apps like Strava to present inaccurate or carefully selected times to improve their image. This challenge drives organizers to seek new ways to ensure transparency and integrity in sporting events. In a broader context, this incident also reflects the significant impact that online marketing can have on the career paths of professional athletes, as some strive to achieve wide-ranging fame through social media.
