The News

FlyDubai announced that its flight from the United Arab Emirates to Israel was diverted after its pilot was attacked by another pilot. According to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, one of the pilots was stabbed by a colleague during the flight, leading to an emergency signal and an immediate landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. The available data indicates that the flight altitude dropped sharply from about 34,000 feet to less than 17,000 feet within a very short period of time.

The company confirmed that all passengers safely boarded an alternative flight to Israel. Sources in the aviation industry stated that the flight was a Boeing 737 Max 8. Netanyahu said the passengers exhibited great courage in preventing a potential disaster. Netanyahu said in a video message: "The passengers are the heroes who prevented a major disaster."

In contrast, opposition leader Yair Lapid criticized the government for exploiting the incident for political purposes. Lapid tweeted on X: "I will not allow anyone to claim that this incident was expected or mentioned in the security warnings I received from the Prime Minister." Lapid added that the government is trying to exploit the incident to improve its political image.

Following the incident, Netanyahu ordered the strengthening of security measures on all incoming and outgoing flights from Israel. Security sources also noted that the incident highlights the internal threat to civil aviation, where Philip Baum, director of Green Light Ltd, clarified that the internal threat has become the greatest threat to civil aviation in the modern era. Baum said: "Since September 11, we have lost more lives on commercial flights due to pilot suicides from mental health issues than from terrorist attacks."

Analysis & Context

Analytically, this incident sheds light on the security challenges faced by airlines in the Middle East, where relations between Israel and Arab countries are experiencing unprecedented developments. The incident also underscores the need to improve security measures inside aircraft, especially in light of internal threats that may come from the crew itself. In a broader context, the incident highlights the importance of security cooperation between countries in the region to ensure the safety of air travel.
