The News

The G7 announced the release of up to 100 million barrels of oil and diesel to boost supplies and lower prices that have recently spiked sharply. This initiative includes the release of a large amount of diesel over 20 days, with the possibility of releasing more as needed, according to the group's leaders in a statement.

US President Donald Trump indicated that this move came after pressure he exerted on G7 members to increase diesel supplies in the global market. Despite his threat to ban US diesel exports, Trump assured that this decision "was never on the table."

In this context, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that the agreement will contribute to lowering fuel prices, particularly diesel, noting that "President Trump was very clear on this matter." British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab added that these measures will stabilize supplies and provide protection from price shocks for companies and consumers.

According to the joint statement by the group, this step will be implemented in coordination with the International Energy Agency (IEA) over four months, with a focus on releasing diesel in the first weeks. However, the statement did not specify the partner countries contributing to this measure.

Oil industry sources pointed out that diesel poses a specific challenge due to the difficulty in reducing demand for it in transport and agriculture sectors. According to Matt Smith, director of commodity research at Kpler, oil prices have risen again due to reports of Saudi Arabia's plans to launch an attack in Yemen.

At the same time, the group noted that it will work on coordinating maintenance schedules to avoid simultaneous refinery closures, thereby reducing pressure on supplies. It also emphasized the importance of maintaining sanctions against Russia in light of the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Analysis & Context

Analytically, this move by G7 countries is an attempt to lower diesel and other fuel prices that have risen significantly due to Middle Eastern conflicts and Russian export restrictions. The United States plays a crucial role in global diesel supplies, producing approximately four to five million barrels per day and exporting around 1.2 to 1.5 million barrels per day. In a broader context, European countries face significant challenges in securing diesel due to Russian restrictions and Middle Eastern conflicts. G7 countries are striving to enhance energy cooperation and avoid export restrictions that could impact global markets.
