The News

In mid-September, Mohammed began hearing the sounds of shelling and gunfire in his village in the Jebel Habashi area of Taiz. After just one day, the fighting intensified and the sounds grew closer. After four years of relative calm, war had returned to Jebel Habashi, as the Houthis attempt to advance into government-controlled areas. The fighting has caused civilians to fear moving about their homes and farms. Mohammed fled with his wife and child to the city of Taiz, but the city itself is under threat from the Houthis. Mohammed now lives with a relative, while thousands of others are in displacement camps.

Mohammed told Al Jazeera, "I am lucky to have a relative who can host me temporarily. I cannot bear living in overcrowded camps that lack food, healthcare, and sanitation."

The escalation of fighting has increased pressure on humanitarian services in Taiz and other war-affected areas. The UN reported that the number of internally displaced persons may exceed 230,000. Mohammed Radaman, a displacement camp official in Jebel Habashi, visited several camps and reported that road closures have led to unprecedented humanitarian suffering.

Radaman said, "Closed roads sometimes mean death for civilians." Before the escalation of fighting, it was easy to deliver aid to Taiz, but now journeys have become dangerous due to the treacherous mountain roads.

Analysis & Context

From an analytical perspective, the worsening humanitarian crisis in Yemen due to the escalation of fighting between the government and the Houthis increases the suffering of civilians. Yemen relies on imports for most of its food needs, and the loss of access to ports like Mocha exacerbates food shortages and high prices.

In a broader context, humanitarian organizations face significant challenges in reaching displaced persons and victims due to movement restrictions and closed roads. This increases the urgent need for international support to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid and maintain essential services.

Politically, the escalation of fighting in Taiz underscores the importance of diplomacy and diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict and achieve comprehensive peace in Yemen.
