U.S. President Donald Trump announced that South Korea will invest $200 billion in energy projects in the United States. The announcement was made by Trump at the White House on Wednesday. However, South Korea declared the following day that the Alaska natural gas pipeline project had not yet been finalized and would be decided based on commercial and legal conditions.
Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform: "The United States and South Korea have agreed to begin working together on the Alaska natural gas pipeline project worth $50 billion." He also noted that South Korea will also invest $22.3 billion in a Texas liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal project.
In contrast, South Korea's Ministry of Trade expressed regret over Trump's announcement, stating that South Korea has not yet decided to invest in the Alaska natural gas pipeline project. South Korea's Minister of Industry, Kim Jong Kwan, also stated that his government expressed regret over the U.S. announcement. Kim told CNN: "No decision has been made regarding the project or the potential scale of investment."
In another context, South Korea announced it will invest $120 billion to build eight nuclear power plants, a move that comes as part of a trade agreement signed between the two countries in July 2025. According to the agreement, South Korea agreed to invest $350 billion in the United States and increase its purchases of American products, while the United States agreed to impose a 15% tariff on South Korean imports.
This announcement comes at a time when Trump is seeking to bolster his standing ahead of the anticipated mid-term elections in November, hoping that voters will reflect concerns about rising fuel prices and the U.S.-Iran conflict. At the same time, Trump pointed out that South Korea has not provided sufficient support to the United States in its war against Iran, raising questions about the future of military relations between the two countries.

Analysis & Context
From an analytical perspective, this announcement is part of President Trump's efforts to strengthen economic relations between the United States and South Korea. This investment aims to boost the U.S. energy sector and create new job opportunities. However, the project faces challenges in South Korea, where the government is striving to ensure the commercial viability of the project before giving its approval. In a broader context, this investment reflects the trade tensions between the two countries and the United States' efforts to enhance its economic cooperation with its allies in Asia.
