The News

US President Donald Trump announced that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has become his friend and downplayed concerns about North Korea's weapons of mass destruction. Trump stated in Washington, DC on Tuesday, "As long as I'm here, Kim Jong Un will be fine," adding that Kim respects and likes him. Trump expressed his belief that North Korea's nuclear capability is "big, but not like us."

In a separate development, South Korean Defense Minister Suh Wook stated last week that North Korea possesses between 80 and 120 nuclear warheads, a figure much higher than what Trump recently disclosed. The US and Israel consider Iran unauthorized to possess nuclear weapons and have waged war on Iran since February 2023, leading to global energy supply fluctuations and rising fuel prices, which have negatively impacted Trump's popularity ahead of the November midterm elections.

Elsewhere, Trump has sought to restart talks with Kim after previous negotiations broke down due to the US's refusal to relinquish its demand for Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear arsenal. Trump met with Kim twice in 2018 and 2019, but without significant progress. Since then, North Korea has continued to expand its nuclear-capable missile arsenal and has strengthened its ties with Russia and China, especially following the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Trump has expressed his desire to hold a personal meeting with Kim before the end of the year, but North Korea has not officially confirmed this meeting.

Analysis & Context

Analytically, Trump's statements reflect a shift in the US's stance towards North Korea. In the past, the US pressed North Korea to eliminate its nuclear arsenal, but now it appears Trump is accepting its existence. This shift may reflect Trump's desire to achieve diplomatic success before the upcoming presidential elections.

In a broader context, the US faces increasing challenges in its Middle East policy, with the ongoing war on Iran. This war has affected global energy supplies and raised fuel prices, negatively impacting Trump's popularity.

It is worth noting that North Korea has conducted missile and nuclear tests in recent years, leading to tensions with the US and its allies. Nevertheless, it appears that Trump is seeking to resume diplomacy with Kim, although North Korea has yet to officially confirm its willingness for a personal meeting.
