The UAE's public prosecutor announced that a copilot of FlyDubai attempted to commit an act of terrorism during a flight last week. According to the Emirates News Agency WAM, Hamad Saeed Al Shamsi stated that the copilot on flight FZ1073 used a crowbar to attack the pilot inside the cockpit with the aim of taking control of the aircraft.
Al Shamsi clarified that the investigation is ongoing to uncover all the circumstances of the incident and its motives, as well as related communications, and to conduct technical examinations and forensic examinations of physical and digital evidence. He added that the final results will be announced upon completion of the necessary procedures.
The incident occurred on a flight heading from Dubai in the UAE to Tel Aviv in Israel, where Indian pilot Smith Methar was slightly injured by the copilot. This led to an emergency descent of the aircraft by 17,000 feet before the crew was able to regain control. The flight was diverted and forced to land at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Tabuk, northwest Saudi Arabia.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu noted that Israel is investigating whether the copilot acted on instructions from anyone, warning that anyone connected to the incident will face severe consequences. FlyDubai suspended all its flights to Israel following the incident, leading to the cancellation of EL AL's flights, which disrupted some Israelis in the UAE.
At 22:00 GMT on Friday, the first repatriation flight organized by Israeli airline Arkia arrived at Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport from Dubai.
