A ceasefire has begun in the Ukrainian city of Oleshky, which is under Russian occupation, where the residents are suffering from a severe shortage of food, water, and electricity. According to Ukrainian military sources and the Russian Defense Ministry, the ceasefire, which has been reached, aims to allow humanitarian aid to be delivered and civilians to be evacuated. The White House stated that this ceasefire was secured by US First Lady Melania Trump.

Oleshky is located on the front line in the Kherson region, and the residents are facing extremely difficult humanitarian conditions. The city has become almost deserted after housing 24,000 people before the war began. According to Kiev officials, approximately 6,000 people, including 200 children, are still trapped in Oleshky and its outskirts. Reports indicate that many residents are relying on cooking with wild grass to survive.

The harsh conditions have significantly deteriorated the humanitarian situation in Oleshky. All stores have been closed, and electricity, gas, and water have not been available in the city for three years. The roads leading to the city are also mined, making the delivery of humanitarian aid extremely difficult. According to one resident, "I don't know how long I will stay in the hospital," expressing concern about not being able to join the evacuation process.

Meanwhile, Pope Leo XIV expressed deep concern over the situation in Oleshky, requesting Russian President Vladimir Putin to allow food and medical aid to be delivered to the city. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky was urged to cooperate with Moscow to ensure the implementation of the ceasefire. According to Kirill Budanov, head of Zelensky's office, "Ensuring the safe return of our citizens is of utmost importance."

Despite the optimism among residents regarding the possibility of evacuation, there are fears that Russia may prevent people who leave from returning to Ukraine. Some are concerned that their phones and electronic devices might be searched for any potential support for the Ukrainian army, which could lead to their arrest and torture. As a result, Zelensky warned that the mines being cleared could lead to the evacuation of civilians towards Russian territory.

Analysis & Context

From an analytical perspective, the current ceasefire in Oleshky is part of broader efforts to improve humanitarian conditions in Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia. This ceasefire reflects ongoing tensions between the two sides and their efforts to secure mutual concessions. In a broader context, Oleshky faces significant challenges in providing food and medical care, reflecting the wider humanitarian crisis resulting from the Russian-Ukrainian war. Additionally, there are concerns that Russians may prevent residents from returning to Ukraine or investigate them for supporting the Ukrainian army.
