The News

Russian President Vladimir Putin reaffirmed during his address to the Russian parliament that his government enjoys significant public support, as the United Russia party secured a sweeping majority in the Duma. However, Putin did not clarify whether he would alter his stance on the special military operation in Ukraine. Analysts are closely watching Putin's upcoming speech at the Valdai Discussion Club in Moscow, where he traditionally outlines his vision for Russian foreign policy.

According to Russian media reports, Moscow appears to be encouraging the continuation of the military operation in Ukraine, particularly with the Ukrainian air defense missile shortage and an increase in Russian air strikes during winter. Kyiv has noted the difficulty in intercepting daily Russian missile and drone strikes.

Moscow accused European countries of waging a hybrid war against Russia through weapon and financial aid to Ukraine. In Germany, a drone carrying an explosive device was found near Ukrainian cargo planes at Leipzig Airport. In response, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that the use of Western weapons against Russia constitutes a European war against Russia.

In this context, Russian foreign policy experts warn that Russia might be compelled to escalate militarily if European support for Ukraine continues. Strategic advisor to Russian foreign policy Sergey Karaganov stated that Russia may initially use conventional forces but might resort to nuclear weapons if European support for Ukraine persists. Karaganov added that he does not anticipate a nuclear response from European or American countries.

Nevertheless, the Kremlin continues to accuse Western nations of double standards, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accusing the United States of using brute force worldwide, including in Venezuela and Iran. However, the Kremlin views the use of force against Ukraine as a necessary defense of Russia from a "Nazi system" supported by the West.

Analysis & Context

Analytically, Russia appears to be using the war in Ukraine as a means to diminish Western support for Ukraine. In the broader context, Russia continues to promote a narrative that portrays the events in Ukraine as a European war against Russia, ignoring the fact that Russia initiated the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Politically, Putin is using the Russian parliament to bolster his political support, noting that the United Russia party now has more members than ever before. Militarily, Russia continues to employ advanced weapons such as ballistic missiles and drones to target Ukrainian infrastructure, increasing pressure on Ukraine.
