The News

It is planned that the new Yalu Bridge connecting China and North Korea will open in early October, more than a decade after its completion. The bridge, which links the Chinese city of Dandong and the North Korean trade center Sinuiju, aims to alleviate pressure on the old Sino-North Korean Friendship Bridge. According to an analysis by 38 North, significant progress has been made in constructing customs, immigration, and warehouse facilities on the North Korean side of the bridge.

At the same time, North Korea announced the opening of another bridge over the Tumen River connecting the North Korean region of Rason with Khasan in Russia. This bridge strengthens trade and economic relations between North Korea and Russia, providing new routes for trade and land transportation. According to Han Ki Beom, a former South Korean National Intelligence Service official, North Korea is seeking to balance its relations with China and Russia to avoid over-reliance on either.

Han added that Russia benefits from cooperation with North Korea by using the Rajin port as a gateway to the Pacific Ocean. Meanwhile, China aims to maintain its dominance as North Korea's primary partner. According to Ahn Chan-il, director of the North Korea Strategy Center in Seoul, the opening of the bridges holds geopolitical significance as North Korea can use them to enhance its diplomatic standing.

With the resumption of train movements between China and North Korea in 2022, the opening of the new bridge is expected to strengthen trade between the two countries. According to a former South Korean Unification Ministry official, the bridge’s opening will provide an opportunity to boost trade between China and its northeastern regions, particularly in sectors such as food industries and construction. He added that North Korea needs imports from China to bolster its industrial and commercial sectors.

Analysis & Context

From an analytical perspective, the opening of the new Yalu Bridge demonstrates North Korea's efforts to achieve a balance in its relations with major powers. This balance aims to maintain its political and economic independence. Russia, meanwhile, seeks to strengthen its presence on the Korean Peninsula through the development of transportation infrastructure through North Korea.

In a broader context, these steps are part of North Korea's strategy to balance its relations with Russia and China, seeking to exploit economic and political opportunities from both countries.

Economically, the opening of the bridges can contribute to enhancing trade between North Korea and China, providing opportunities for northeastern Chinese companies to import and export goods. However, there may be challenges due to North Korea's shortage of foreign currency and export restrictions.
