The News

Several explosive devices detonated in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, during the night, according to local reports and diplomatic sources. This came hours after the government announced a ban on drones in the city's airspace. Sources close to the opposition armed groups stated that the attacks were carried out using drones. A resident in Goro told reporters that the explosion was strong enough to trigger car alarms. Another resident in Torhaoulcho said he and his friends heard a powerful explosion while playing games.

Ethiopian authorities have not provided any official details about the attacks, casualties, or damage. Government sources noted that the ministry did not respond to BBC requests for comment. Meanwhile, the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced it would repatriate ten Eritrean diplomats from its embassy in Asmara due to what it considers a threat to Ethiopian national security.

Clashes erupted in northern Ethiopia weeks after the formation of a new armed coalition including Tigray forces. The Ethiopian government accused Tigray of initiating the fighting, while the Eritrean government denied these allegations. Eritrean Information Minister Yemane Gebremeskel stated that the Ethiopian government seeks to blame its neighbors for internal problems. He added that this behavior aims to divert attention from internal conflicts fueled by the government.

Fighting continues in various parts of Ethiopia, including Tigray, Afar, and Amhara. First responders in Amhara reported that 52 civilians were killed over three days of fighting. Humanitarian sources also indicated that tens of thousands have fled their homes in Afar. In the Amhara region, clashes are ongoing between government forces and Vano militias allied with Tigray. However, these reports could not be independently verified due to a ban on foreign media in Tigray.

Analysis & Context

From an analytical perspective, these explosions indicate escalating security tensions in Ethiopia, where the government is seeking to tighten control over airspace through a drone ban. This tension also reflects broader security challenges in the country, where conflicts are escalating between the government and armed groups in different regions.

In a wider context, Ethiopia faces growing internal and external challenges, including tensions with neighbors such as Eritrea. The two countries exchange accusations of involvement in internal conflicts, increasing regional stability concerns.
