The News

An Indian Muslim announced that he had not slept well for three consecutive days due to attempts to demolish a mosque in the city of Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh. The situation began on Sunday when Zisan Khan, a digital marketing entrepreneur, joined dozens of Muslims gathered outside the Shahi mosque in Ujjain to prevent partial demolition for road widening ahead of a Hindu religious celebration.

According to Khan, the Ujjain municipal corporation issued a notice in July, demanding that the mosque remove its structure by September 10 or face strict action. The Supreme Court also rejected a Muslim plea to stop the demolition, stating that the need for additional space for the 2028 celebrations takes precedence.

As protests continued, both sides agreed to remove three feet of the mosque instead of the more than seven feet requested by authorities. However, on Sunday night, thousands gathered outside the mosque as construction machinery approached it. Khan said, "The administration told us that we either remove the mosque ourselves or they will do it."

On Monday morning, police fired tear gas to disperse the protesters, resulting in around twenty injuries and the arrest of several men. The Muslims also began to remove part of the mosque themselves. Khan said, "This hurts us deeply."

The next day, authorities removed part of the mosque's minaret, but no work had begun inside the mosque yet. A Muslim group also organized a protest in the capital, New Delhi, against the ongoing demolition of mosques. Mr. Syed Sadak Hussaini, president of the Indian Muslim Association, said, "When a place of worship is demolished without legal and constitutional guarantees, it raises serious questions about the rule of law."

Analysis & Context

Analytically, this event is part of the ongoing struggle between Muslims and Hindus in India. The current Indian government, supported by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is frequently accused of destroying Islamic sites under the pretext that they were built on former Hindu temple lands. These policies are causing concern among Muslims in India, who fear that their mosques and religious institutions are under threat. In a broader context, this event is linked to ongoing political and religious conflicts in India, where Muslims see their religious and cultural rights being jeopardized.
