The News
Edward Rugadya Kigenanangoma, a journalist, was crowned King of the Toro Kingdom in Uganda, making him the eleventh King of the Batooro people. The coronation of the 56-year-old Kigenanangoma took place at a ceremony in Fort Portal, the capital of the Toro Kingdom. According to the Associated Press, Kigenanangoma ascended the throne following the death of the previous King, Oyo Nyimba, from cancer, which led to a dispute over who should inherit the throne.
At the ceremony, Kigenanangoma was chosen by a committee of 21 members from the royal Babito family, and the coronation was celebrated with traditional rituals such as the sacrifice of a bull and the spilling of chicken blood. He also participated in a mock battle for the throne. His former colleagues at the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation described him as a humble and friendly person.
Although Uganda is a constitutional republic, the four former state kingdoms remain important symbols of identity and heritage. However, Kigenanangoma was not part of the direct line of succession, which raised objections from the mother of the late King and Princess Ruth Komuntemba. The mother claimed that her younger, unnamed son was the rightful heir to the Toro throne. However, some critics argue that this son should have appeared before the king’s death to be a legitimate king.
