The News

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned former US President Donald Trump's decision to broker a deal for Russia to export diesel fuel to the United States, considering it a gift to Russian President Vladimir Putin that would help fund the ongoing war. Western European countries supported this stance. Trump announced that Russia would provide 300,000 tons of diesel immediately, followed by 500,000 tons in November, and 1 million tons thereafter. He also stated that the US would freeze sanctions on Russian diesel exports until April 7.

Putin, in turn, said Russia is ready to supply oil and petroleum products to the US and global markets, but did not specify the exact quantities. In response, Zelensky said that Russia would retaliate against this deal with airstrikes and urged the US to engage in robust talks with Russia. He also noted that Russian strikes on Zaporizhzhia and Kryvyi Rih in Ukraine were in response to the deal.

Analysts confirmed that Russia may not be able to supply the mentioned amounts of diesel, and that the deal would not significantly impact fuel prices in the US. Tim Armitage, an investment strategist at Quilter Cheviot, estimated that the first batch of diesel would be around 2.25 million barrels, while US daily consumption is around 3.8 million barrels. He added, "This appears to be a late attempt by President Trump to ease inflation ahead of the midterm elections."

High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, expressed concern that the deal would give Russia more funds to fuel the war. He also noted that the EU would continue to work with international partners to support Ukraine and achieve sustainable peace. Meanwhile, the British government confirmed it would continue to work with international partners to support Ukraine and increase the costs of Putin's aggression.

Analysis & Context

Analytically, Trump's deal with Russia raises questions about Russia's ability to supply the agreed-upon large quantities of diesel. The potential impact of this deal on US fuel prices is also unclear. Based on expert analyses, the deal may not have a significant impact on US fuel prices. Furthermore, the deal could lead to increased financial support for Russia, raising concerns among European and American allies supportive of Ukraine. In a broader context, this deal highlights the political and economic tensions between the US and Russia, as well as the challenges Ukraine faces in defending its energy infrastructure against Russian attacks.
