President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador announced that the remains delivered to the special forces in Haiti do not belong to his men, as they included the body of a child and another individual wearing military attire from another country. Bukele dispatched a military contingent of hundreds of soldiers to search for the four kidnapped members of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) Gang Interdiction Unit (GIU) who were part of a mission to combat gang-related violence in the country. This unit was tasked with mitigating gang violence in Haiti, but it was attacked by armed gangs in a territory under their control.
In tweets on Twitter, Bukele stated that the remains found included the body of a very tall individual who did not match the missing men, as well as another person wearing military attire from another country. He also added that the remains found included identity cards and military uniforms from other countries. According to sources close to the Salvadoran mission, The New York Times reported that the bodies found on the outskirts of Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, may belong to the missing men, but Bukele questioned this report.
Violence in Haiti has escalated since the assassination of its president in 2021, leading to a significant deterioration in the security situation. According to the United Nations, gangs have caused the deaths and injuries of more than 5,700 people between January and September of this year. Bukele stated that the mission of the GIU where the kidnapped men were working was "to save lives and provide medical evacuation, not to wage war." Although rescue attempts were carried out after the abduction of the men, they were hampered by fighting in the area.
