The News

The Yemeni Army announced on Wednesday that it carried out 468 military operations against Houthi militants in three fronts across the country, resulting in the death and injury of hundreds of group members. Colonel Majeed Abdullah Al-Nazili, the army spokesperson, stated in a post on the social media platform X that the operations targeted Houthi militants and their military equipment in the eastern and Amran fronts in central Yemen, and the Mansoura front in Waziya, southwest of the country. He noted that these operations led to the destruction of military equipment and vehicles belonging to the militias, without providing additional details.

Nazili also pointed out that the Houthis target civilians and civilian property, including educational facilities, in a desperate attempt to wear down the will of the Yemeni people and reject their extremist and destructive project. He emphasized that these attacks "represent a serious violation of international humanitarian law and principles of civilian protection."

These developments come amid a rise in fighting between government forces and the Houthis in several fronts, including in the southwestern provinces of Taiz and Lahj near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, Marib to the east, Jawf to the north, and Ibb in central Yemen. This military escalation is the largest since the April 2022 ceasefire, which was followed by a period of relative calm. These events unfold in the context of the ongoing conflict in Yemen, which began when the Houthis took control of Sanaa and several other provinces in 2014, prompting a Saudi-led military coalition to intervene in 2015 to support the internationally recognized Yemeni government.

Analysis & Context

From an analytical perspective, these military operations indicate a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between the Yemeni government forces and the Houthi group. This escalation follows a period of relative calm after the April 2022 ceasefire agreement. The Houthis continue to target civilians and civilian infrastructure, including schools, in an attempt to wear down the will of the Yemeni people and reject their extremist and destructive agenda. This military escalation reflects the ongoing complexities of the Yemeni conflict, as the Saudi-led coalition continues to support the internationally recognized Yemeni government against the Houthis, who have controlled several provinces in the country since 2014.
