The News
On Monday, Argentine President Javier Milei announced that he has given the United Kingdom a two-week ultimatum to halt the oil extraction project in the Falkland Islands' waters, or else Argentina will bring the case to the Hamburg-based International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. He wrote on X that he has instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and legal authorities to initiate arbitration proceedings against the UK due to its illegal exploitation of resources in the Sea Lion oil project.
The Sea Lion oil project, developed by Israeli Navitas and British Rockhopper companies, is located approximately 220 kilometers north of the Falkland Islands. Production is expected to begin in 2028. However, the companies involved have rejected Argentina's objections, asserting that they hold valid licenses for the project.
This move escalates the ongoing dispute over sovereignty of the Falkland Islands, where Argentina claims its right to natural resources in the area, citing a UN resolution urging both sides to abstain from unilateral actions amid the ongoing dispute. According to Milei, companies involved in oil exploration without Argentina's consent may face sanctions, including prohibition from operating in Argentina's oil and minerals sectors.
In a related context, the Argentine government has sent a bill to Congress proposing prison sentences of up to 20 years for those who exploit resources around the Falkland Islands without Argentine authorization. Authorities in Argentina are investigating at least 60 companies and executives suspected of violating Argentine laws.
For its part, the UK affirms the right of the Falkland Islands' inhabitants to self-determination, pointing to the 2013 referendum where 99.8% of voters supported remaining as a British overseas territory. However, Argentina dismisses the results of this referendum and considers the sovereignty over the islands to be its own.
