The News

Opposition leader Yair Lapid accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of promoting fear ahead of the general elections scheduled for October 7th. Lapid, who leads the Yesh Atid party, requested an urgent security meeting after Netanyahu warned that enemies might attack Israel before the elections. In a media interview, Lapid stated that he is certain the elections will proceed as planned and there is no reason for public alarm. He also accused Netanyahu of using military bases as "furniture for campaign video clips" and criticized his security warnings close to the elections.

In another context, Netanyahu posted a video online showing him at a military base in front of a fighter jet, where he said there were signs that enemies might attack Israel before the elections. However, he did not specify any specific enemies, yet in recent weeks he has warned of Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Palestinian Authority. Lapid responded by saying that Netanyahu is ignoring security warnings and using them to bolster his campaign. Lapid added, "Netanyahu has distanced himself from all warnings before October 7th, and now, 28 days before the election, he suddenly becomes preoccupied with promoting fear."

The scheduled October 7th elections are the first in Israel since the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which led to a war between Israel and Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran. The war resulted in the death of over 76,000 Palestinians. These elections could be crucial in determining whether Netanyahu will remain in power after a historic period, or fall to moderate rivals who promise a new era. According to opinion polls, Netanyahu is in a fierce battle with his rival General Gadi Eisenkot, who leads the Yesh Atid party. Reuters estimates show that the Yesh Atid party is leading the Likud party by two points.

In an effort to counter Netanyahu, opposition leaders agreed to coordinate to form a new government. According to the agreement announced last week, each leader committed to work in their areas to increase participation and support for forming a new government. Netanyahu announced that he held a security meeting with Lapid where he raised warnings about potential attacks "on all fronts before the elections." Netanyahu stressed that he holds regular security meetings with opposition leaders.

Analysis & Context

From an analytical perspective, this debate reflects the internal political tension in Israel ahead of the elections. Netanyahu is seeking to use security threats as a tool to boost his popularity and support among conservative voters, while Lapid and his opposition allies are trying to diminish the importance of these warnings and bolster public confidence in the political system. In a wider context, these elections come in the aftermath of the October 2023 crisis that led to a wide-scale war in Gaza, making them pivotal in modern Israeli history. Netanyahu's political future depends on his ability to maintain support among voters and form a strong government coalition.
