The News

A London court has ruled to keep two Iranians in custody on charges of preparing terrorist acts against the Jewish community in the United Kingdom. The two men were arrested the evening before Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, on September 20th.

The judge stated that Rahman S., 34, and Salm A., 36, were accused of surveilling Jewish targets in Manchester. It was also noted that the men planned to use a "homemade explosive device" and contacted a third person believed to be Iranian for instructions on how to construct the bomb.

Police reported that the men entered Britain via small boats across the English Channel from Europe. One of them received asylum, while the other's application is still under review.

Vicky Evans, the National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism, stated that the plot is "isolated" and there is no ongoing public danger. She added that the Manchester plot has no connection to the suspected plot at RAF Fairford last week.

On the other hand, a 25-year-old British-Iranian man was released after being detained in connection with the RAF Fairford investigation. Five other British men were also arrested in the same context.

Anti-Semitic attacks in Britain have been on the rise since Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, raising concerns among British authorities about Iranian and Russian threats.

Analysis & Context

Analytically, this case highlights the ongoing threats from Iran against Jewish communities in Europe. Iran has a long history of using proxies to carry out attacks on British soil, including attacks and plots against Jews and dissidents. This case follows another terrorist attempt in RAF Fairford, suggesting that Iran may be involved in multiple recent terrorist attempts in the UK.

In a broader context, anti-Semitic attacks have sharply increased since Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, raising additional concerns about the safety of Jewish communities in Europe. These threats are increasing pressure on European governments to enhance security and confront Islamic extremism.

It is noteworthy that the UK remains in a high state of alert for potential threats from Russia and Iran, reflecting the ongoing tensions in regional and international relations.
