The News

A large march has commenced in Pakistan demanding the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been in custody since August 2023 on corruption charges his lawyers claim are politically motivated. The march began on Sunday in Larkana Marwat, northwest of the country, with the goal of reaching a city near the capital Islamabad by Thursday. Despite PTI (Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf) party leaders not officially declaring their destination, authorities have taken stringent security measures to prevent the march from reaching Islamabad.

Shoukat Afridi, the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province governed by PTI, announced that the march will cover all regions of the country. Interior Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar accused the provincial government of obstructing negotiations, stating they had failed to honor previous commitments on security issues. However, PTI confirmed that talks had failed due to the government's refusal to allow party leaders to visit Khan for consultation on national issues.

The Pakistani government is under increasing pressure from Khan's family and supporters who protest over his deteriorating health. His family reported that his right eye vision has significantly declined due to neglect in prison. His sister, Aseema Khanum, was also arrested in Lahore for allegedly inciting unrest.

In August last year, Khan was temporarily released for medical treatment in a government hospital amid concerns over his health condition. However, his family and party criticized the government for failing to comply with the court order to direct Khan to a private hospital for examination.

Khan, who served as Prime Minister from 2018 to 2022, faces over a hundred cases involving allegations of security leaks and the sale of government gifts. Despite this, he continues to enjoy significant popular support, as previous protests have resulted in the deaths of eight people and damage to public property.

Analysis & Context

Analytically, the march highlights the substantial public support for Khan, who remains popular in Pakistan. In a broader context, the Pakistani government faces significant challenges in handling this issue, with officials fearing that the march could lead to further disturbances and conflicts. The failure of negotiations between the government and the ruling PTI party suggests that the political crisis in Pakistan may persist for an extended period.
