The News

The African Union Commission issued a statement on Thursday urging Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Egypt to exercise the utmost restraint and patience in light of the rising tensions among these three countries. The Commission emphasized the importance of maintaining open channels of communication and peaceful dialogue to resolve disputes in accordance with the principles of the African Union's founding treaty. It also stated that it is ready to provide support in efforts to ease tensions, facilitate dialogue, and reach peaceful resolutions to conflicts.

On the same day, Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a diplomatic note to the Egyptian Embassy in Addis Ababa declaring diplomat Ahmed Maharem Ahmed Suleiman a persona non grata and ordering him to leave the country within 48 hours. Ethiopia also decided to close its embassy in Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, and expelled ten Eritrean diplomats. In response, Eritrea decided to terminate its diplomatic relations with Ethiopia.

These developments come at a time when clashes have resumed between federal forces and the Tigray People's Liberation Front in northern Ethiopia. These tensions are fueled by complex geopolitical disputes, including maritime access issues along the Red Sea and water rights related to Ethiopia's Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam between Egypt and Ethiopia, as well as changing security and military alliances in the Horn of Africa. The African Union Commission has stated that it is monitoring these rising tensions with concern and is calling on all parties to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could escalate the situation.

Analysis & Context

From an analytical perspective, the tensions between Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Egypt point to growing geopolitical complexities in the East African region. Ethiopia is seeking to secure maritime corridors through the Red Sea due to its status as a landlocked major power, which raises competitive concerns with neighboring countries such as Egypt and Eritrea. In a broader context, the region faces significant water challenges, with both Egypt and Ethiopia heavily dependent on the Nile River, exacerbating tensions around Ethiopia's Grand Renaissance Dam. Additionally, military and political alliances play a significant role in escalating tensions, increasing the need for peaceful dialogue and regional cooperation.
