The News

Voters in Bosnia and Herzegovina on Sunday elected the country's three-member presidency and representatives in various governing bodies at the federal and cantonal levels. Over three and a half million registered voters participated in the voting process, which took place from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM local time.

According to the Anadolu Agency, the elections are held under the power-sharing system stipulated by the 1995 Dayton Agreement, which ended the Bosnian War. The presidency in Bosnia and Herzegovina consists of three members representing the country's main ethnic groups: Bosniaks, Croats, and Serbs. Voters cast ballots for one candidate from each group, with voting rights restricted based on place of residence.

Regarding the Bosniak seat, incumbent President Denis Zvizdic, candidate for the Social Democratic Party, competes against other candidates such as Bakir Izetbegovic from the Bosniak Democratic Action Party, Samir Maric from the Party of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Fahrudin Radoncic from the Best Future List. For the Croat seat, Darija Karabegovic from the Croatian Democratic Union, Slobodan Covic from the Democratic Front, and Zdenko Lukic from a coalition of five opposition Croat parties are among the candidates.

Incumbent Serb President Zeljko Komsic seeks re-election as the candidate for the Independent Social Democratic Coalition. He faces competition from Mladen Ivanić from the Serbian Democratic Party and Nebojsa Radmanovic from the Justice for Justice list.

The elections also include the election of the 42-member House of Representatives, where 28 members are elected from the Federation and 14 from Republika Srpska. Additionally, there will be voting for members of the legislative councils of the Federation and Republika Srpska, as well as the election of the President of Republika Srpska and local municipal council elections in the Federation.

According to the agency, preliminary election results are expected after the polling stations close on Sunday evening.

Analysis & Context

From an analytical perspective, the three-member presidency system in Bosnia and Herzegovina reflects historical and political tensions between the country's main ethnic groups. In a broader context, the Dayton Peace Agreement plays a crucial role in maintaining political stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina after the civil war. At the same time, the power-sharing system faces challenges in achieving national-level economic and political integration and development.
