The News

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez confirmed that US pressure is intensifying and worsening the situation in Cuba, accusing Washington of increasing economic measures against Havana. In a post on the social media platform X, Rodriguez stated that "the US embargo is tightening, along with the energy embargo and secondary restrictions, causing daily damage to Cuban families." He added that the new measures aim to limit people-to-people exchanges and expand restrictions on academic and research activities. Rodriguez also pointed out that these measures seek to complicate Cuba's economic transformation and target both the public and private sectors.

The previous day, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo described Cuba as a "failed state" in an interview with Fox News, stating that the island does not have a functioning economy or government. Pompeo explained that "the problem Cuba is facing now is that it is a failed state in every sense of the word." He also pointed to migration as evidence of the difficulties of the Cuban economy, noting that around 20% of Cuba's population has left the island since 2021. Pompeo emphasized that economic reforms alone would not be sufficient and that political freedom must accompany economic changes.

On the same day, Rodriguez noted that humanitarian aid intended for Cuba through the United Nations has been unable to reach the island due to US pressure and threats against international shipping companies. He mentioned that over 7,000 containers have not been able to reach Cuba, while thanking UN agencies for their efforts to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid. Cuba is facing a severe shortage of basic goods and fuel, along with frequent power outages, while the UN has expressed concern about the impact of the energy crisis on health services.

Analysis & Context

Analytically, Cuba faces significant economic and political challenges due to ongoing US pressure. The US seeks to change the political system in Cuba through stringent economic sanctions. These measures lead to shortages of basic goods and fuel, exacerbating the suffering of Cuban citizens.

In a broader context, US-Cuban relations play a critical role in regional politics. The US aims to push Cuba towards political and economic changes, while Cuba seeks to maintain its independence and cope with economic pressure. These tensions affect relations between the two countries and drive Cuba to seek assistance from international organizations such as the United Nations.

It is also noteworthy that tensions between the two countries impact Cuba's relationships with other nations in the region. Cuba seeks to strengthen ties with countries like Venezuela and Russia to mitigate the effects of US sanctions. These developments make the situation in Cuba complex and sensitive, as ongoing economic and political pressures continue to influence the country's future.
